US House 5th District May 7th, 2021 Update

FOXX REPORT

Lifelong success is cultivated through educational opportunities that are deliberately tailored to meet the individual needs of every student. Unfortunately, the Biden Administration has ignored this commonsense principle, and is instead pushing a top down approach that not only orchestrates a federal takeover of America’s school systems, but it also pushes students into predetermined career pathways. One of the culprits for this attack against students and families is President Biden’s $1.8 trillion so-called American Families Plan (AFP). Allow me to show you the facts.

Under the AFP, students in K-12 would be subjected to curriculum that flies in the face of parental choice – for example, forcing students to learn critical race theory at young ages. Public universities are already plagued by similar approaches, and now those same radical “teachings” are being imposed on students in public schools. This ideological rot must end, not only for the sake of America’s students, but also for the parents who are being robbed of their ability to choose an education that fits the needs of their sons and daughters. This is simply the wrong approach.

Additionally, the AFP seeks to eliminate tuition and fees at the nation’s least expensive colleges, though that does absolutely nothing to solve the college affordability crisis. If anything, this initiative will only decrease low-income Americans’ access to these already low-cost options. The idea of “free tuition” coming from Washington Democrats is filled to the brim with hypocrisy. Rather than pursue this course of action, the Administration should work with Republicans to connect students to educational opportunities leading to careers. It’s a simple solution that does not throw money at a problem that simply does not exist.

Let me be clear, when the federal government flexes its muscle in education, students and families lose. Taking control of children as early as possible in their educational pathways is egregious. The simple truth is that once the federal government has control of children’s education, they’ve assumed control of society itself. It’s about what students deserve and what parents want, not allowing the federal government to intrude on the most important years students have. Rest assured, I’ll continue to call out this Administration on its efforts to infiltrate public education with a radicalized agenda. Families and students across this country deserve an education system that’s centered on opportunity, not heavy-handed government mandates that cause more harm than good.

My Latest Op-Ed

Recently, I penned an op-ed in Roll Call about President Biden’s inexcusable failure to reopen schools. In his first 100 days, President Biden has not fulfilled his promise to fully reopen schools for in-person learning. From caving to the money of teachers unions to denying the science and walking back promises, the only thing he has stayed firm on is his willingness to put the schemes of his political allies over those of America’s students. Let me be clear, America’s students deserve to return to their classrooms safely so that their educational pursuits are not delayed any further. Anything less is unacceptable.

Light Up Blue, Remember with Red

On April 28th, Sergeant Chris Ward and K-9 Officer Logan Fox of the Watauga Sheriff’s Office lost their lives in the line of duty. This is a tremendous tragedy for not only Watauga County, but also for law enforcement across the entire state. Their memories, and their service to the community, will always be a blessing. In response, the Watauga community has come together, in an overwhelming fashion, to pay tribute to these two fallen heroes and the countless law enforcement officials and first responders who have worked diligently to aid the community during this time. On May 10th, a Community Day of Remembrance will be held in their memory with help from many businesses, organizations, and proud citizens of Watauga County.

Quote of The Week

“We know that the American people are only safe because our law enforcement officers face danger. We can only rest easy because they never rest. And we can only dwell in peace because they stand between us and the danger.”

-Former Attorney General William Barr

Have a blessed weekend.

Sincerely,

Virginia Foxx
